Some Gifted Children

Every morning I pass by a bus stop near my house. I see a mother and her little girl waiting for school bus. Neither this little girl nor her little school are as ‘normal’ as you and me. She is a mentally challenged child. But having born with abnormality does not make her any less charming. She has the same loveliness as any five year old kid has. Her smile is as warm as any other innocent child’s smile. In fact she has everything that is required to live a blissful childish life.

When I look at such children the only question that I ask myself is, why on earth did nature decide to come-up with such deformations for human beings? Couldn’t it rest this flaw only with other animals and spare mankind of this harsh punishment? Most parents of such children lead a listless and morbid life. Every time they see a healthy child, they mourn at God’s decision to choose them for this suffering. Their heart bleeds with helplessness. They have neither answer nor escape.

But I think mental illness is not a reflection of a person’s inability to perform other skillful tasks. These children with incapacity to read, write and memorize are indeed truly gifted with talents in spheres like music, arts and crafts. All they need is faithful emotional nourishment and love. Research proves that we humans are driven not by intellect but by will. These are matters of heart and not head. Though none of them can perhaps ever become ‘engineer’ or architect, they definitely remain pure and clean as nature gifted them to this world. Rationality cannot destroy their boundless spirit.

In our world of sanity we certainly miss this opportunity. By choice and not by chance.
