Man on Wire – The True Story

If you have watched this 2008 thrilling documentary, you know what I am talking about. Yes, it’s based on the true story of a crazy guy called Philippe Petit’s unbelievably daring and highly illegal stunt in New York City in year 1974.

The stunt was – high wire walking between New York City’s World Trade Center’s twin towers! This was unprotected, unofficial but meticulously planned event. People who saw him perform this act could not believe their senses.

This is a must watch documentary, especially for those who believe in man’s ability to go beyond physical limits of human body.

Well crafted and poignantly told. I wish I get another chance to watch it, on big screen.

Well if you were not lucky, as me, to have been present in the NY City on that day, here is another chance. Another hero is in the making. For several years. Here is his true story which I came across today in Economic Times “Freedom from Economics” section (ET, Monday, 3/6/13, pg. no. 16).

On 23rd June 2013, Nik Wallenda, high wire artist will do a tightrope walk across the Grand Canyon live on Discovery. He will be without a safety net or tether. He will be on a wire over  6000 feet above the sea level.

Nik feels he a normal human being who has gained absolute control over his mind. He has written a book titled “Balance” and maintains his own website. He is a believer. Read about him. You will start adoring him.

To a great extent it’s also in his genes. His family has been doing such feats for generations.

He works very hard to “stay on the top”. Perseverance and not talent has taken him where he stands today.

The last stunt performed by him was crossing the Niagara falls on 15th Feb 2012. I love these lines of Nik, “To be fearful is a choice, but the danger is real.”

Fear is how we perceive this danger. Nik Wallenda teaches us how to ignore fear and concentrate on action. That’s what I learnt from him.
And if you too are seriously interested, do watch this video and be there to witness SKYWIRE LIVE on 23rd June 2013.
