Magic, Miracle and Marvel

Magic, Miracle and Marvel are words that are often used interchangeably. Do they differ significantly? I think the answer is yes!

Magic is the magician’s ability of giving an unique experience to others. It is performed for others. The performer controls certain variables to get the desired outcome. This sounds really scientific. Indeed magic is scientific. It is a scientific form of art! It gives a wow effect. Pulling a rabbit out of a hat is an example magic.

Miracles are events which are often seen as unexpected outcomes. Miracle is a positive surprise. These are results that were either very unlikely or never foreseen by the performer (doer). The doer has little control over these results. Miracles are mostly said to have happened when a negative outcome is most likely to occur and suddenly some random ‘force’ turns the course of events. Magic is ‘done’ but miracles ‘happen’. Therefore it can be said that magic can be repeated but miracles cannot be. A man falls off from a cliff. He survives this accident because of his shirt which gets hooked to a branch of a tree. This is an example of a miracle.

Marvels are a result of deliberate and determined toil. Marvels are created. They just don’t happen. Individuals and groups work hard to get the desired outcome. There are no shortcuts or tricks to create marvels. No divine ‘force’ can suddenly change the course of events. There can be obstacles on the way while making of a marvel but these get surmounted. Planned, coordinated efforts alone can bring a marvel into existence. Taj-Mahal, one of the seven wonders of world, is an excellent example of a marvel.

Relating this discussion to strategies adopted by companies, can we thus say that some products/innovations are magical, some are miraculous and some are marvelous?

Apple iPod – Magical (You do it, others praise it, difficult to replicate all of a sudden, controlled and well executed wow effect on consumers).

Google (Innovations) – Marvel (All above qualities along with non-linear change).

Facebook (Social Networking) – Miracle (unexpected surprise for performers i.e. makers of the concept).

Well, these were all elementary thoughts on the topic. Think and let me know.
